How To: Tissue Paper Flowers

Saving money is hard to do. But throwing a beautiful event does not mean having to break the bank. There are many ways to save a few dollar$ and impress your guests. We do have to admit, most of the time this does means putting in a little extra elbow grease - but that's the fun part!

One great way to remain under budget, fake flowers. Most hear fake, anything, and cringe. Not the case with Tissue Paper flowers. With so many different patterns, colors and sizes to mix and match, (as we like to say) the possibilities are endless. And with 100% recycled paper now available, you can honor your budget and our planet!

Supplies You'll Need

1.  Tissue Paper

2. Green Wire (stem)

3. Scissors

Here's our 'How To' to Perfectly Festive Flowers

1. Fold one piece of Tissue Paper accordion-style, each fold roughly 1'' thick

2. depending on the size of flower you want, cut accordion strip into segments (flowers shown are 4 segments per sheet of Tissue Paper)

3. Cut two 1/2'' slits in the middle of each segment

4. String thin wire through slits of paper, fold wire in half and twist wire to form 'stem'

5. Separate folds of the Tissue Paper using your fingertips in a back and forth pattern, molding into a beautiful flower

Awesome Find: Ikea Tolsby Frame

I love finding products like the Tolsby frame from Ikea. Not only is it super-cheap at .99, but it can be used in so many ways. I try to avoid Ikea (for the sake of my bank account and my husband's sanity), but I might have to make a special trip to stock up on these frames.

I first saw these frames featured on Ruffled, which offers an awesome template for creating table numbers and menus to go in the freames.  But then one of my favorite wedding blogs, Gator Bride, also featured them when she used the template as inspiration for her own table numbers.

I just love the simplicity of these frames (and the price!).  These are great for displaying photos, menus, table numbers, seating charts, and so much more at an event.

Do you have a favorite "awesome find" that you use for all your events?  Send us an email at info@wevegotitchicago to share your find with us. We might even feature you and your find on our blog (but we'll ask permission first!).

Make It Yours Monday: Creative Nametags

One of my favorite parts about going to events (and planning them!) is meeting new people.  Special events are a great time for meeting people because everyone's in a festive mood and eager to socialize. But the hardest part about meeting all those new faces is trying to remember everyone's names.  Nametags seem like an easy solution, but they're so boring and generic.

Well, Offbeat Bride has come up with another great solution! Custom nametags can help your guests remember the names of the people they meet in a fun and creative way.  The tags featured on Offbeat Bride not only introduce the guest, but also give their relation to the host or guest of honor.  And they add a fun fact to get guests talking!

Now, we love love love the idea of adding the guest's relation to the host/guest of honor, especially for a huge event like a wedding where you have two families coming together for the first time. And the "If I were" line is so fun for getting your guests to interact. Don't worry about finding an original fact for each nametag. Just find a list that works for your group.  Play off the theme of the event or the guest list or just go totally random and fun.  Here's a few fun-facts lines that we came up with:

If I were on a reality TV show, I'd be on ___
If I were in the breakfast club, I'd be the ___
If I were a state, I'd be ___
When I was little, I wanted to be a ___
My first pet was named ___
If I could travel anywhere in the world, I'd go to ___
My childhood nickname was ___
If I could pick a super-power, I'd be ___

So get creative and have fun coming up with custom nametags for your next event!

Is an Event Planner Worth the Money?

As a planner, that's something I hear a lot.  The answer is yes, but I bet you were expecting that.  But instead of just saying yes, I'd like to tell you a story from my wedding day.

Being a planner myself, I scoffed at the idea of hiring one for my wedding. I planned everything, and everything was going smoothly until we arrived at the ceremony site and saw the flowers.  The florist I had been working with for months decided to quit on the morning of my wedding, so his associates scrambled to interpret his notes and do the best they could. The flowers, while not what I ordered, were lovely and usable. However, the ribbon binding them was not. It was gaudy and did not match the flowers or the motif of the wedding. A change had to be made quickly.

Beautiful . . . but not what I ordered.

By that time of the day, the florist's shop had already closed. I had ribbon at my house that would work, so I asked one of my bridesmaids to go and pick it up for me.  She agreed and we fixed the bouquets just in time.  Everything did work out for me, but not the way it should have.

So how would it have been different if I'd hired an event planner?  Well, for one, the whole problem would have been avoided because a planner would have been at the ceremony site when the flowers arrived hours before I did. She would have seen the error and had it corrected before the florist closed shop for the day.  Or if ribbon needed to be fetched from my house last-minute, she could have sent an assistant or gone herself so my bridesmaid could have spent time relaxing with me.

The bottom line is, an event planner is like insurance. You may never get in a car accident, but it's worth it to know that you have protection if you do.  It's piece of mind.  Your day may be perfect (and not just in your eyes), but if something does go wrong, a planner is there to fix it so you can enjoy the event.

If you have a question about how an event planner can help make your event run smoothly, email us at info@wevegotitchicago.com. We're happy to help.

40 Green Tips in Honor of Earth Day

On Thursday, we'll celebrate 40 years of Earth Day.  For us, here at WGIC, not much will be different. Every day is Earth Day for us, as we strive to be concious of our impact all the time.  Our country has been celebrating this special day for 40 years, and in the past decade it's even become trendy and cool to be green. But some people still aren't on board. Some people think it's expensive or time-consuming to be eco-friendly.  Others imagine eating wheat grass and using scratchy, beige, recycled paper products. We're here to tell you that being green has come a long way.

In honor of Earth Day's 40th Anniversary, we present you with 40 fun, easy, and affordable ways to go green at your next event. We promise that if you do, you'll make a big impact on your guests, but not the environment!

1. Choose an earth-friendly paper company to create your invitations, save-the-dates, menus and more. Foosie Design is our favorite!

2. Use a wedding website to send guests information and to collect RSVPs.  This will cut back on the amount of paper needed for your invitations.

3. Wear a gently used wedding dress, or donate yours when you're done so someone else can benefit.

4. Have your bridesmaids select their own dresses in styles that suit them.  They will be able to wear them again for other functions, creating less waste.

5.  Have your event at a venue with lots of natural lighting to cut down on electricity use.

6. Host an outdoor party in a mild season.  Cool breezes and warm sunshine will keep your guests comfortable without using air conditioning or heat.

7. Use potted plants as centerpieces.  Cut flowers make a big impact on the Earth and are dying as soon as they are cut. Plants can last for years and make a wonderful thank you gift to those who help with clean-up!

8. Use second-hand items. Hosting an afternoon tea party? Head to your local thrift shop for cute mis-matched tea cups and saucers instead of buying new ones.  Supporting second-hand shops helps keep these items out of the landfills.

9. Always serve food and drinks in glassware and not disposable plastic or paper.

10.  Choose a venue that will accomodate your wedding ceremony and reception to cut back on unneccessary travel.

11. Opt for a caterer who uses local, organic foods.

12.  Request digital proofs from your photographer instead of printed ones.

13. Find a caterer who donates leftovers, composts scraps, and recycles materials.

14. Collect tables, chairs and linens from friends and family. Mis-matched tables can create playful whimsy for a children's party or an outdoor barbeque.

15. Off-set the carbon footprint of your event with sites like Carbonfund.org.

16. Print agendas, itineraries, maps and more on recycled paper.

17. If you're using flowers for decor, make sure you pick blooms that are locally grown and in season to cut down on the costs of transporting them.

18. Use paper or cloth flowers instead of real ones.  When you're done, give them to a friend or donate them to someone else to be used.

19. Choose a location that is convenient to the largest number of guests to cut down on the impact of travel.

20. Instead of placing disposable cameras on every table, ask guests to take pictures with their own digital cameras (who doesn't have one these days?) and then upload them on to a community website for everyone to share.

21. Use recycled wine bottles as vases and centerpieces, rather than buying or renting vases.  It's cheaper and keeps the bottles out of the landfills.

22. Use pieces from nature as decor. Leaves, branches, flowers, driftwood, seashells, grass, small trees, even tree stumps can make great decor.

23. Have your decor do double duty. Give potted plant centerpieces to guests as a thank you for helping with set-up or clean-up.  Or use beautifully packaged favors as decor along a table.

24. If you have to use disposable dinnerware, opt for a recycled brand or those made from a renewable resource like bamboo.

25. If most of your guests are from out of town, rent a bunch of bikes and keep them at the hotel for them to explore your city.

26. Bring reusable containers to package leftover food for you and your guests.

27. Hire an acoustic band to entertain guests. Keep the venue and guest list small to create an intimate environment that won't require amps for the music. This will cut down on energy usage.

28. Give local, home-made favors that don't require shipping cross-country or poor manufacturing processes.

29. Use fruits and veggies in centerpieces. Although flowers can be composted too, foods can be donated to a local foodbank or taken home and used by the host, eliminating even more waste.

30. Place recycling and compost bins in an easily accessible area. Be sure to clearly label them with restrictions on what can be placed in the bins.

31. Send plantable invitations that can be composted or turned into a beautiful growing reminder of your fete.

32. Use LED lights or soy wax candles to create artificial light, if needed.

33. Purchase favors and thank you gifts from Fair-Trade shops.

34. Instead of favors, make a donation to a local charity in your guests' names.

35. Always use vendors who have also have green values.

36. Planning a bar at your event? Serve wine from a local vineyard or beer that is locally brewed to cut down on the impact of transportation.

37. If you're set on sending an actual invitation (as opposed to an e-vite), send a postcard to eliminate excess paper. Include a website for extra information that won't fit.

38. Use cloth linens, not paper.

39. Choose menu items that can be prepared on a gas grill, which emits less carbon than other methods.

40.  Spread the word.  Your guests will be a lot more on board with participating in your green event if they know about it in advance. So let them know on the invitations or website or in any contact you have with them prior to the occasion.

What about you? What's your favorite go-to tip for planning a green event? Leave a comment and let us know what's worked for you and what hasn't.

Google Weddings

Just when you thought Google couldn't get any better, now they want to help plan your wedding!  Yep, you read that right. Google has created a range of Google Docs to help make the wedding planning process that much easier for you.  Google has teamed up with the folks over at Style Me Pretty to create more than 20 docs for you.

So what exactly are these Google Docs?  They are templates that you can download and fill in with your personal info. They are tools you can use to make your life easier, like the address collector:

The address collector link can be sent to everyone on your guest list. They enter their information and it appears in a spreadsheet, all ready for you to use when addressing invitations. How easy is that?!

Another favorite is the budget spreadsheet.  Google has included EVERYTHING you could possibly imagine spending money on for your big day.  The template even includes an estimated column and an actual column so you can track how well you are staying within your budget.

Another favorite of ours is the Music List. It's a great way to organize your music preferences for your DJ or band.  And a great way to ensure that the Chicken Dance doesn't get played!

These are just a few of the amazingly helpful docs that Google has created to help you. Be sure to check out the full list here. They have more than 20 docs to make the planning process easier. Thanks, Google!

Are you planning a wedding?  Will you use any of the Google Wedding Docs?  Leave a comment and tell us about your big plans and how Google Docs will be incorporated.  Or, if you're still intimidated by the entire process, shoot us an email at info@wevegotitchicago.com to see how we can help make your day amazing!

Get Engaged!?

Christmas is a busy time of year. Not only for presents, Santa and parties, but also for engagements!! Studies show that as many as 26% of all marriage proposals happen during the months of November and December! That's 1 in 4!!! And while there are plenty of ways to ask, only one answer from her will do - YES!!!

If you are one of the lucky ladies this year, Congratulations! Now comes the fun part (at least we sure think so!).  With most marriages falling somewhere between eight and fourteen months after the proposal occurs, there is a ton of stuff to get together in a very short period of time!

We've put together a Sample Wedding Checklist for you, complete with what you should be thinking about and working on from beginning (the engagement) to end (the ceremony), and everything in between, of course.

Keep checking back as we count down the days to your perfect wedding!

This can get overwhelming, but thorough investigative tactics are necessary to make smart decisions. Look into:
          -florists
          -caterers
-venues (make sure to ask what they provide, if anything. Eg: linens, clean up, etc)
          -entertainment
          -bakers
          -linens, etc.

Interview Vendors
If you wish to book their services be sure to discuss deposits and cancellation clauses.  Be sure to pass the agreement/contract over to your planner to ensure industry standards are upheld.

Pick Your Attendants
Whether you get creative or not, be sure to give your bridesmaids and groomsmen plenty of time to mark their calendars for your big day! If they are out of town friends discuss the amount of time you suggest they take off of work (welcome/rehearsal dinner, day after brunch, etc.), where they will stay, and who will be paying for what. Be upfront with all details!

Be a Green Bride

Being green is on everyone's minds these days, especially soon-to-be brides. Weddings bring many people together with the potential to have a very large impact on our Earth. But we're happy to report that that doesn't always have to be the case.

WGIC just found a great website with a TON of resources to help you be a Green Bride! The site is called the Green Bride Guide and has the following choices to choose from:

Learn
Features: FAQ's, Real Weddings and Lessons Learned.

Plan
Features: Carbon Calculator, Wedding Websites, Charity Registry

Shop
Features: Choose from hundreds of different products categorized by product type

Share
Features: Have you recently (or not!) had a green wedding? Explain your ideas on what went well, and what you wish you would have changed here.

Our favorite though has to be the Eco-Strategy tool. Here you can pick just how you want to go green; whether it's buying flowers from a company that donates to the World Wildlife Fund, using alternative energy sources, going vegan, or a any of the other 100's of choices!

Every bit counts!

Sonsorship/Vendor Agreements

When planning any event, it is good to get things down on paper.  This helps avoid problems later for both you and your vendors.  There are many different types of contracts/agreements out there and it can sometimes be confusing. Keep the following things in mind when reviewing contracts/agreements:

1. READ THOUROUGHLY
Don't ever sign anything without reading it in it's entirety.  No contract/agreement is ever perfect on the first draft. There will always be something that you need to strike through and change.

             a. Initial Changes
When making said changes, as always happens with contracts/agreements, be sure to initial by each change that you've made. Be sure to send back to your vendor and have them initial each portion as well. This will serve as a confirmation that both parties are aware of the changes made and have agreed to the new terms.

2. Check Dates & Times
This may seem like an obvious step when reviewing a contract/agreement, but be sure to double and triple check all dates and times outlined.  Be sure the contract/agreement states at what time your vendor will arrive and how long they will stay at your event. This section should be very detailed and outline exactly what you're expecting.

3. Deposit
Be sure to check over the payment plan.  You may discuss one payment schedule over they phone, but another may be defaulted in your vendor's contracts/agreements. Be sure that all terms discussed prior to the drafting and signing of the agreement are in fact outlined on paper. The last thing you want is a fee for not paying on time!

4. Clean Up
Who will be in charge of clean up? If you're working with a caterer, who will be in charge of disposing the refuse? Will there be a separate container and drop-off for recyclables? Will they also provide the cans and bags for collecting the waste, or is that up to you?

5. Set Up
Be sure that all materials needed by all vendors will be provided by the actual vendor. Most photographers have their own equipment right? Well cameras and film, yes, but what about tables, chairs, table cloths, etc? Be sure to list all materials that you expect a vendor to provide in the agreement.  If you are supplying certain items, put that in the agreement as well.

The main thing to remember when signing any contract/agreement is the DETAIL!!  Every word needs to be read and understood to ensure you get what you pay for and what you expect. The last thing you want is to show up on the day of your event and be surprised - trust us!

WGIC also provides al la carte services, with contract/agreement negotiations and review being one of our specialties. Give us a call at 312-285-4544 if you're unsure about something in your vendor agreement and we'll be happy to assist!

Green Cupcakes

Dessert bars are hot these days for all types of events: weddings, showers and birthdays alike. Here's a great way to stay green when including cupcakes with your favorite sweets. Found on the Earth Friendly Weddings Blog.

Dream Green sells eco-friendly cupcake wrappers in packs of 100. Each design is printed with soy inks on recycled paper. This is a great find for the DIY bride and party thrower. If you're working with a local bakery, be sure to ask if they would be willing to use the wrappers you've purchased - most bakers should have no problem making this adjustment!

Yum!

It IS Easy Being Green! Cont.

Building on our post from yesterday, here are some other cute ways to go green at your wedding? See below:

1. A green garter, of course! Be eco-chic, sexy and fun with Julianne Smith's Green Garters.

Impact: Using materials that are 100% post consumer waste cuts down on the materials destined for landfills.

2. Use vendors that provide multiple services. Many florists also provide linens, tables and chairs. Many DJ's also provide lighting, photography, and videography like Music Masters Entertainment.

Impact: Using fewer vendors cuts down on the number of vehicles driving to and from your wedding AND reduces the number of meetings you have to drive to and from prior to your big day. This is also a time saver, and who doesn't need more time?!

3.  Your ceremony and reception aren't the only green events associated with your wedding, what about a Green Honeymoon? Check out one of our favorite blogs, Green Wedding Chica, for great ways to go green on your honeymoon.

Impact: Honeymooning in the US helps decrease your Carbon Footprint. When traveling out of the country, traveling to Eco-Conscious destinations makes all the difference.  Sustainable adventures protect the Earth's wildlife and vegetation; hotels that recycle and wash only when needed conserve resources and electricity.
